Springfield, Massachusetts – Snow will spread into western and central Massachusetts by midday Tuesday, then transition to freezing rain during the evening commute, creating slick roads that could last into early Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from noon Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday for northern Connecticut, much of central and western Massachusetts, northeast Massachusetts and northwest Rhode Island. Snow totals up to two inches are expected before a change to sleet and freezing rain produces up to one tenth of an inch of ice.

Interstate 90 through Springfield and Worcester, I-91 in the Connecticut River Valley and Route 2 across northern Worcester County may see icy overpasses first. In the higher elevations of Franklin and Hampshire counties, colder air could allow ice to persist longer overnight.

Drivers should reduce speed and allow extra stopping distance, especially during the Tuesday evening commute and early Wednesday morning travel. Untreated sidewalks and parking lots may become slick as temperatures hover near freezing.

Precipitation tapers off before daybreak Wednesday, but patchy ice could linger into the morning rush.
