Indiana, Pennsylvania – A tenth of an inch of ice is enough to turn untreated roads into skating rinks before sunrise, and that’s exactly what drivers across western Pennsylvania are facing through mid-morning Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday for Jefferson, Indiana, Armstrong, Clarion, Butler, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango and Forest counties, along with the higher elevations of Westmoreland and Fayette counties. Ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch are expected.
Elevated stretches of Route 119 near Punxsutawney, Route 22 through Armstrong County and Interstate 80 across Clarion and Jefferson counties are especially prone to slick bridges and overpasses. In the Laurel Highlands, colder air at higher elevations near Ligonier and Donegal may allow ice to persist longer.
Officials urge motorists to slow down and use caution, particularly on untreated secondary roads and sidewalks. Even where pavement appears wet, a thin layer of ice may be present.
Temperatures should gradually rise late this morning, improving travel conditions, though isolated icy patches could linger on shaded roads beyond 10 a.m.
