Billings, Montana – Strong storms are expected to sweep across eastern Montana through 9 p.m. Saturday, bringing the threat of 70 mph wind gusts, large hail, and lightning to nearly 20 counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (No. 487) is in effect until 9 p.m. MDT for Big Horn, Yellowstone, Dawson, Rosebud, Fergus, and 14 additional counties across central and eastern Montana. The primary concerns include isolated damaging winds, hail up to the size of quarters, and rapid shifts in visibility due to heavy downpours.

Cities at risk include Miles City, Glendive, Billings, and Lewistown. Travel on I-94 and U.S. Route 87 may become hazardous by late afternoon, especially where intense storm cells develop. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid open fields, and charge devices in case of power outages.

This system follows a recent heat wave and could trigger sudden temperature drops and gusty outflow winds. Similar setups in July 2021 led to widespread tree damage and brief road closures.

The watch remains in effect until 9 p.m., with possible updates or extensions based on storm development.
