Sheridan, Wyo. – Severe storms could sweep across northeastern Wyoming through 9 p.m. Saturday, bringing damaging winds and large hail to areas including Sheridan and Campbell counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 487 covers five counties—Campbell, Crook, Johnson, Sheridan, and Weston—where conditions are favorable for thunderstorms capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and hail up to one inch in diameter. The watch went into effect at 12:55 p.m. MDT and extends through Saturday evening.

Communities from Gillette to Buffalo should be prepared for sudden downpours, frequent lightning, and the potential for localized power outages. Travel along I-90 and U.S. Route 14 may be hazardous during periods of strong wind or poor visibility. Residents are urged to move indoors if skies darken and avoid parking under trees or near power lines.

The storms come amid a stretch of unusually warm July weather, and today’s threat marks the first organized severe event for the region this month.

The severe thunderstorm watch remains active until 9 p.m. MDT. Additional warnings could be issued as storms develop. Stay tuned to local alerts and NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
