Richmond, VA – Virginia State Police are increasing patrols statewide as millions of travelers prepare to hit the road for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
According to Virginia State Police, approximately 1.21 million Virginians are expected to travel during the holiday period, with nearly 90% traveling by car. Officials are warning drivers to expect heavier traffic and increased law enforcement presence through Monday night.
Beginning Friday, troopers joined agencies nationwide for the Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort, or C.A.R.E., a traffic safety campaign focused on reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities linked to speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt violations.
The Memorial Day enforcement period runs through midnight Monday, May 25, with all available state police troopers and supervisors deployed on patrol across Virginia highways.
State police said 2025’s Memorial Day holiday period saw nine roadway fatalities across Virginia. During that same enforcement campaign, troopers cited more than 3,300 drivers for speeding and more than 1,500 for reckless driving. Authorities also arrested 71 drivers on DUI charges and issued hundreds of citations for hands-free cellphone violations.
Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel Jeffrey S. Katz urged drivers to slow down, remain patient, and prioritize safety during the busy travel weekend.
Officials also noted Virginia continues participating in the annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign, targeting seatbelt and child restraint violations statewide.
Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, avoid distractions behind the wheel, and never drive impaired during the holiday weekend.
