Lincoln, IL – Central Illinois faces a combination of thunderstorms and increasingly dangerous heat through the weekend, with some locations potentially experiencing heat index values above 100 degrees as early as Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service office in Lincoln, periods of showers and thunderstorms will continue through Sunday, while a few strong to severe storms are possible Thursday through Saturday. Hot and humid conditions will also expand northward late this week.
Thursday’s highs are expected to range from 80 to 90 degrees, with a 40% to 60% chance of storms. The National Weather Service forecast shows afternoon heat index values reaching approximately 106 in Quincy, 109 in Pittsfield and 112 near Edwardsville. Springfield could feel like 100 degrees, while Litchfield could reach a heat index near 105.
Friday brings highs of 85 to 95 degrees and a 30% storm chance. Heat index readings could range from 95 to 105 degrees, with overnight lows between 70 and 75.
The heat intensifies Saturday as actual temperatures climb into the 90s. Heat index values are forecast between 105 and 110 degrees, while thunderstorms remain possible at around 30%. By Saturday, peak afternoon heat indices are expected to climb above 100 degrees across much of the area.
Sunday remains hot and unsettled, with highs from 85 to 95 degrees, heat index values of 95 to 105 and another 30% chance of storms.
