Burlington, Vermont – Rain showers will taper off by late afternoon, but temperatures will drop quickly tonight, with lows near 37°F and colder pockets approaching 32°F, creating a risk of frost before sunrise Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, cooler-than-normal conditions will hold through the weekend, with frost possible each night as skies clear and winds ease. The coldest period arrives Friday night into early Saturday, when lows fall into the low 30s across much of Vermont and northern New York.

Communities including Montpelier, St. Johnsbury, Plattsburgh, and Saranac Lake are most at risk for frost, especially in valleys where temperatures drop fastest. Rural roads may see patchy frost early each morning, though widespread travel issues are not expected.

Daytime highs will stay in the 50s through Saturday, with a slight chance of showers returning Saturday afternoon. By Sunday, temperatures begin to recover into the upper 50s to low 60s, reducing frost coverage but not eliminating the risk entirely.

The main concern is agriculture and gardening. Sensitive plants and early crops can be damaged or killed after several hours near freezing. Cover plants or bring them indoors before sunset each night through the weekend.

Warmer temperatures return early next week, with highs climbing into the 60s and additional chances for rain. More updates are expected as nighttime temperatures and frost coverage become clearer.
