Portland, Oregon – Temperatures are set to surge Tuesday, May 12, with Portland facing an 86 percent chance of reaching at least 80 degrees and a 25 percent chance of hitting 90 degrees by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Portland, probabilities for 80 degrees or higher climb to 98 percent in Hood River, 86 percent in Kelso, 75 percent in Salem, and 56 percent in Eugene. The chance of 90 degrees or higher stands at 25 percent in Portland, 10 percent in Kelso and Hood River, and near zero along the coast in Tillamook.

There is a 30 to 50 percent chance of record-breaking heat in parts of the Portland–Vancouver metro.

The rapid warmup follows cooler conditions Sunday and Monday. Afternoon highs Tuesday could affect outdoor worksites, school athletics, and transit corridors along Interstate 5 and Interstate 84 during peak heating hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
