Wilmington, North Carolina — Steady rain will spread across coastal North Carolina and northeast South Carolina through Saturday, slowing travel and creating water buildup on roads from mid-morning through late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, an area of low pressure will bring widespread rainfall beginning around 8 a.m., with the heaviest rain falling between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Totals of 0.5 to 1.0 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts near 1.1 inches along coastal areas including Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Conway and Jacksonville.

Road conditions will deteriorate quickly during heavier rain bands, especially along U.S. 17, U.S. 74 and I-40 where water can pool on pavement and reduce visibility. Low-lying coastal roads, beach access routes and poor drainage intersections may see standing water develop within minutes, increasing the risk of hydroplaning. Urban areas like downtown Wilmington and Myrtle Beach are most prone to brief flooding at underpasses and intersections.

This is part of a broader coastal system moving just offshore, pulling Atlantic moisture inland and sustaining steady rainfall through the day.

Drivers should slow down on wet roads, avoid water-covered streets and allow extra travel time during peak rainfall hours.

The greatest travel disruption will occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when steady rain will produce the most significant visibility reduction and roadway water buildup.
