Wilmington, NC – Light showers are already dampening roads across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina Sunday, with brief slowdowns expected on major routes like I-40, US-17, and coastal bridges through the afternoon commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, scattered showers and a few weak storms will persist through late afternoon before drier air pushes in by early evening. Winds remain breezy, and rainfall totals are expected to stay light, but enough to create slick pavement and reduced visibility at times.

Communities from Wilmington to Jacksonville and down through North Myrtle Beach will see intermittent rain bands through roughly 5 to 6 p.m. Coastal areas may stay slightly cooler, while inland highs reach between 75 and 80 degrees. Emergency officials note that even light rainfall can lead to minor ponding on low-lying roads, especially along US-74 and NC-211.

Drivers are urged to reduce speed on wet roads and watch for sudden drops in visibility during passing showers. Keep headlights on and allow extra stopping distance, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

Conditions improve after sunset, with skies clearing and temperatures dropping into the low to mid-40s inland overnight, slightly warmer along the coast. No major hazards are expected overnight, but cooler air will settle in before the next update window early Monday morning.
