Wichita, Kan. – A strong cold front sweeping across Kansas is set to bring cooler air and a sharp uptick in rain chances, with the heaviest storms expected late Sunday into Monday. Parts of south-central Kansas, including Hutchinson, Harper, and Winfield, face the greatest threat for heavy downpours, with rainfall probabilities topping 70 percent.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, isolated storms may develop Saturday afternoon, but widespread activity is expected to ramp up late Sunday. Numerous thunderstorms will bring the potential for one inch or more of rain, especially along the Highway 54 and I-35 corridors.

Wichita carries a 66 percent chance of soaking rainfall through Monday night, while Harper County stands at more than 80 percent. Drivers should plan for water-covered roads, reduced visibility, and possible minor flooding in low-lying areas. Outdoor events late Sunday could be disrupted by lightning and heavy rainfall.

Temperatures will dip into the 70s and low 80s under the front, a noticeable break from recent summer heat. The unsettled weather pattern may persist into early next week, with more showers possible beyond Monday.
