La Crosse, Wisconsin – Dangerous heat and humidity are set to return to western Wisconsin, southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa this weekend, with heat index values climbing well into the triple digits and creating hazardous conditions through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a warmer and more humid air mass will move into the Upper Mississippi River Valley beginning Saturday evening, setting the stage for heat index values between 95 and 105 degrees or higher on Sunday and Monday.
The hottest conditions are expected across communities including La Crosse, Eau Claire, Black River Falls, Prairie du Chien, Richland Center, Medford, Mauston, Neillsville, Decorah, Charles City, Cresco, Preston and Dodge Center. Forecast heat index values reach around 100 to 105 degrees in many locations Sunday, with similar or slightly higher values expected Monday. La Crosse is forecast to reach a heat index of approximately 101 degrees Sunday and 103 degrees Monday, while Eau Claire could peak near 103 degrees Sunday and 101 degrees Monday.
The prolonged combination of heat and humidity will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for anyone working outdoors, attending festivals or participating in weekend recreation. Drink plenty of water, spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, wear lightweight clothing and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Residents should also check on older adults, young children and neighbors without reliable cooling. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring the developing heat event, and Heat Advisories or other heat-related alerts may be issued as confidence continues to increase through the weekend.
