Jackson, Mississippi – Dangerous heat will continue across central Mississippi through the weekend before even more oppressive conditions settle in early next week, with afternoon temperatures nearing 100 degrees and heat index values climbing above 110 degrees in many communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, heat index values approaching 105 degrees are expected across much of the forecast area today and Saturday. Afternoon high temperatures will remain in the mid-90s, creating conditions where prolonged outdoor activity could lead to fatigue or heat exhaustion, particularly for those without frequent breaks or adequate hydration.
The more significant heat arrives Monday through the middle of next week, when actual air temperatures are forecast to approach 100 degrees. Combined with high humidity, daily heat index values are expected to reach 110 degrees or higher, creating dangerous conditions across communities including Jackson, Vicksburg, Meridian, Greenville, Brookhaven, Hattiesburg, Philadelphia and Greenwood.
Residents should limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon, drink plenty of water and beverages with electrolytes, wear lightweight clothing and use sunscreen if spending time outside. Those working outdoors should shift strenuous tasks to the early morning or late evening whenever possible. Never leave children, older adults or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
The National Weather Service warns that heat impacts will worsen early next week, and additional Heat Advisories or Extreme Heat Warnings are likely as confidence increases in the prolonged period of dangerous heat.
