Huntsville, Alabama – Heavy rain and localized flooding remain the biggest concerns across parts of North Alabama and southern Middle Tennessee today, with a Flood Watch in effect through this evening before a return to dangerous summer heat early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 p.m. Friday, primarily for areas along and east of Interstate 65, including Huntsville, Cullman, Fort Payne, Scottsboro and surrounding communities. Widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with isolated amounts exceeding 4 inches possible. Heavy rain may lead to flooding of low-lying areas, creeks, rivers and roadways.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue through the weekend, although the threat for widespread flooding will gradually decrease after Friday. Rain chances range from 30% to 80% Friday, 30% to 70% Saturday, and 30% to 50% Sunday. Afternoon highs will reach 86 to 89 degrees Friday, 85 to 89 degrees Saturday, and 90 to 93 degrees Sunday.
By Monday, the weather pattern shifts as hotter and more humid air spreads into the Tennessee Valley. High temperatures will climb to 92 to 96 degrees, and heat index values are expected to creep into the triple digits through next week.
Motorists should never drive across flooded roadways, as water depth and road damage may not be visible. Residents should monitor local streams and creeks for rapidly rising water, especially in flood-prone areas, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts if additional Flood Warnings are issued.
The National Weather Service expects rain chances to continue through the weekend before dangerous heat becomes the primary concern early next week. Additional flood or heat-related advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
