Kansas City, Missouri – Heavy rain and thunderstorms will create hazardous travel conditions across western and central Missouri today before a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat settles over the region this weekend, prompting an Extreme Heat Watch through early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue through Friday, producing widespread rainfall totals of up to 1 inch, with localized amounts between 2 and 4 inches possible. The heaviest rain could lead to flash flooding, river flooding and reduced visibility, especially during the morning and early afternoon commute. While a few thunderstorms are possible, the overall severe weather threat remains low.
Drivers along Interstates 35, 70 and 49 should slow down on rain-soaked roads and avoid driving through flooded areas, where water can quickly become deeper than it appears.
Once the rain exits Friday night, the weather pattern changes dramatically. High temperatures will climb into the mid-90s beginning Saturday, while heat index values of 100 to 110 degrees are expected from Saturday through Tuesday. Overnight lows will remain in the mid to upper 70s, offering little relief from the heat.
An Extreme Heat Watch is in effect from 1 p.m. Saturday through 7 p.m. Tuesday for the Kansas City metropolitan area and surrounding communities, including St. Joseph, Sedalia, Chillicothe, Kirksville, Maryville and nearby locations. The combination of prolonged daytime heat and warm nights will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents should drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon, spend time in air-conditioned buildings and check on older adults, young children and neighbors without reliable cooling. Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
The National Weather Service says forecast temperatures and heat index values may still fluctuate slightly, but confidence is high that dangerous heat will dominate the region through early next week. Additional Heat Advisories or Excessive Heat Warnings may be issued as the event unfolds.
