South Bend, Indiana – A developing “Ring of Fire” weather pattern could bring multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms to Northern Indiana Sunday and Monday, but forecasters say exactly when and where storms develop remains highly uncertain.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the uncertainty isn’t because confidence is low that the overall pattern supports severe weather. Instead, it’s due to the nature of a summertime setup known as the “Ring of Fire.” This pattern develops when a large upper-level ridge, often called a heat dome, expands across the central United States.
Beneath the center of the ridge, hot and humid conditions dominate. Along the edge of the ridge, however, clusters of thunderstorms known as “ridge runners” can develop and race around the perimeter of the high-pressure system. Those storm complexes can travel long distances and occasionally become severe, producing damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall.
Communities across Northern Indiana, including South Bend, Elkhart, Warsaw, Plymouth, Fort Wayne and surrounding areas, should be prepared for changing weather conditions Sunday through Monday. While meteorologists can identify this pattern several days in advance, the National Weather Service says it is extremely difficult to determine the exact timing and location of storms more than 12 to 24 hours ahead of time.
Residents are encouraged to check updated forecasts frequently throughout the weekend, especially if they have outdoor plans. Make sure wireless emergency alerts are enabled and have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings, particularly overnight when storms can develop quickly.
The National Weather Service expects forecast confidence in storm timing and intensity to improve as Sunday approaches, with additional outlooks, watches and warnings likely if severe thunderstorms become more imminent.
