Blacksburg, Va. – Sunshine will dominate much of Virginia’s Piedmont on Saturday as high pressure east of the Blue Ridge keeps skies dry and temperatures near normal. The quiet conditions won’t extend west of the mountains, where scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the greatest storm potential lies in southeast West Virginia, stretching south into the North Carolina mountains. Rain chances will rise in higher elevations near Bluefield, Boone, and Galax, while cities such as Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Danville will see little more than clouds passing through.
Travelers heading along I-81 through southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia may encounter brief downpours and gusty winds late Saturday. Officials advise keeping phones charged in case of power outages and allowing extra time on mountain roads if storms develop.
Conditions will stabilize overnight, with another round of mountain showers possible early Sunday before drier weather expands statewide.
