Chicago, IL – Major travel delays are expected on I-80 in Joliet as lane closures begin Friday, Sept. 13, for bridge deck repairs. The closures will impact westbound traffic over four consecutive weekends.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), closures will start at 10 p.m. Fridays and run until 5 a.m. Mondays. Affected sections include westbound I-80 between Raynor Avenue and Houbolt Road. Ramps from northbound Chicago Street (U.S. 52/Illinois 53) and westbound I-80 to Chicago Street will also close.
At least one westbound lane will remain open throughout, while eastbound I-80 traffic will not be impacted. Local drivers are encouraged to seek alternative routes, as area streets cannot accommodate heavy or oversized trucks.
Further lane closures are expected over three more weekends as the repairs progress. IDOT advises drivers to expect significant delays and to allow extra time for trips. The work will improve the safety and longevity of the bridges along the highway.
The $1.3 billion reconstruction project on I-80 stretches 16 miles from Minooka to Joliet, with completion slated for 2029.
