Charleston, West Virginia – Drivers across West Virginia, southeast Ohio and northeastern Kentucky could hit slick bridges and icy overpasses before 4 a.m. Monday as a burst of snow, sleet and light freezing rain spreads across the middle Ohio Valley.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 a.m. to noon Monday, with 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet and up to a few hundredths of an inch of ice possible. The highest travel impact is expected during the early morning commute.

Road surfaces along I-64, I-77, I-79 and U.S. 35 may turn slippery first on elevated sections, including Ohio River crossings near Huntington, Ashland, Ironton and Point Pleasant. Parkersburg, Ripley, Spencer and Teays Valley could also see brief bursts of mixed precipitation that reduce traction before temperatures climb above freezing.

WVDOH, ODOT and KYTC crews are expected to pretreat and monitor major corridors, but untreated secondary roads, parking lots and sidewalks may ice over quickly. Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance and check 511 for real-time road conditions. Pedestrians should use caution on stairs and driveways, where a thin glaze can cause falls.

The wintry mix should taper by midday Monday, but slick spots may linger into the afternoon. Additional statements are possible if temperatures trend colder than expected.
