Martinsburg, WV – The Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10 p.m. this Sunday, with potentially hazardous weather expected to impact the region. Issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) at 2 p.m., the watch warns of scattered thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph. In addition to strong winds, isolated large hail, possibly up to 1.5 inches in diameter, could occur.

The NWS forecasts that thunderstorms will become more widespread and intense throughout the afternoon, increasing the likelihood of severe weather conditions. Residents in the Eastern Panhandle are advised to take precautions, such as securing outdoor furniture and other items that could be blown away by strong winds. The NWS also advises people in the watch area to remain indoors during the storms and to seek immediate shelter if warnings are issued.

As thunderstorms approach, local power outages and damage to trees and structures are possible. Residents should remain vigilant, stay informed through weather alerts, and be prepared to act quickly if conditions worsen. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch extends approximately 85 miles east and west of a line from Charlottesville, VA, to Wilkes-Barre, PA.
