Charleston, WV – West Virginia is set to experience a significant heatwave over the next several days, with temperatures predicted to rise dangerously high. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for the region, warning that heat indices could make outdoor conditions feel like 100 degrees or higher by Monday and Tuesday.

According to the NWS, the heatwave will begin today, with temperatures reaching 93 degrees. The heat will intensify on Sunday, climbing to 94 degrees, and by Monday, temperatures are expected to reach 96 degrees. The peak of the heatwave will occur on Tuesday, with a forecasted high of 98 degrees and heat index values exceeding 100 degrees.

During extreme heat, the body’s ability to cool itself is compromised, leading to potential heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, heavy sweating, and nausea, while heat stroke symptoms include confusion, dizziness, and unconsciousness. Immediate medical attention is advised if heat stroke is suspected.

The NWS advises residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. They also recommend moving to cooler areas, wearing loose clothing, and drinking plenty of fluids to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The heatwave is expected to break by Wednesday, with a forecasted high of 84 degrees and a 45% chance of rain, offering some relief. Residents are urged to stay informed on weather updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the intense heat. For more information on heat safety, visit NWS Heat Safety.
