Grand Rapids, MI – Beachgoers heading to Lake Michigan this Memorial Day weekend can expect mostly calm swimming conditions, but dangerously cold water temperatures will remain a concern across west Michigan beaches.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, waves are expected to stay relatively low through the holiday weekend, generally ranging between 1 and 3 feet through Sunday before decreasing to around 1 foot or less on Memorial Day.
Forecasters said Friday will feature mostly sunny conditions with air temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 60s. Shower chances are expected to increase early Saturday and again Sunday as a few weather systems move through the region.
Officials noted gusty offshore winds may continue through Saturday, especially near open shoreline areas along Lake Michigan.
Despite the calmer wave conditions, water temperatures remain extremely cold, ranging from the low 40s to low 50s. Meteorologists warn that cold water can quickly lead to shock, exhaustion, or dangerous swimming conditions even during warmer air temperatures.
The National Weather Service currently rates swim risk as low through the weekend, though beach visitors are still encouraged to wear life jackets, remain aware of changing lake conditions, and closely supervise children near the water.
Temperatures are expected to warm into the 70s by Memorial Day Monday, creating more favorable beach weather conditions across west Michigan.
Communities along the Lake Michigan shoreline from Muskegon to Holland and South Haven are expected to see busy beaches throughout the holiday weekend.
