Buffalo, NY – A cool and wet start to the Memorial Day weekend is expected across western New York, while dangerously cold lake temperatures continue posing risks for swimmers and boaters.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, scattered showers are expected Saturday with lingering rain possible into Sunday morning before improving conditions arrive later Sunday and continue into Memorial Day.
Forecasters said warmer temperatures are expected by Monday, which may tempt residents and visitors to head to area beaches and lakeshores. However, officials warn that water temperatures remain extremely cold despite milder air temperatures.
Current lake temperatures are hovering around 55 degrees on Lake Erie and approximately 51 degrees on Lake Ontario.
Meteorologists stressed that cold water can quickly become dangerous, even on warmer days, increasing the risk of cold-water shock, exhaustion, and drowning.
The National Weather Service and U.S. Coast Guard are urging anyone entering the water to wear life jackets and remain aware of changing lake conditions throughout the holiday weekend.
Beachgoers and boaters are also encouraged to check local forecasts before heading onto the water and to let someone know their plans before traveling.
The improving weather pattern expected by Memorial Day could lead to crowded waterfronts across Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara County, and other Great Lakes communities despite the chilly water temperatures.
Officials continue reminding residents that cold water temperatures can remain hazardous well into late spring and early summer across the Great Lakes region.
