Ellensburg, Washington – Strong winds are whipping through the Kittitas Valley Wednesday, creating hazardous travel conditions and raising concerns for high-profile vehicles on exposed roadways.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. PDT for the region. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph and a 70–90% confidence level in this forecast. The advisory covers cities including Ellensburg and surrounding parts of central Washington.
Drivers along I-90, especially through the Vantage and Ryegrass Summit corridors, are urged to use caution. High-profile vehicles like trucks, RVs, and trailers are at particular risk of tipping in crosswinds. The NWS recommends leaving extra following distance, avoiding sudden lane changes, and checking conditions via TripCheck or WSDOT before travel.
Power outages are also possible due to downed tree limbs or lines. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and keep phones charged.
Winds are expected to ease late tonight, but local officials may extend warnings if conditions persist. Travelers are encouraged to monitor updates and avoid non-essential trips until the advisory expires.
