Fort Morgan, Colorado – A dangerous line of storms is sweeping into eastern Colorado this evening, bringing the threat of 80 mph winds and ping-pong-sized hail to communities across the tri-state area.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10 p.m. MDT Wednesday for parts of Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska. The most immediate impacts are hitting Morgan and Logan counties, with storms moving in from the west. Frequent lightning and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter are also possible.
Cities under the watch include Fort Morgan, Sterling, Yuma, and Sidney, where outdoor activity is discouraged. Interstate 76 and nearby highways could become hazardous due to wind-driven debris or sudden hail bursts. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors, and charge mobile devices in case of power outages.
Roughly 88,000 people, 97 schools, and 14 hospitals fall within the watch zone. The threat mirrors similar storm systems from early May 2023 that caused localized damage and travel disruptions.
The watch remains active through Wednesday night, with additional warnings possible if conditions worsen. Stay tuned to local alerts and NOAA Weather Radio for the latest updates.
