Washington County, WI – A family of five safely escaped a house fire Sunday afternoon in the Town of Trenton after flames heavily damaged the home’s garage and attic, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified of the fire at approximately 12:43 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2026, at a residence in the 2000 block of Paradise Drive. The Newburg Fire Department and West Bend Fire Department responded alongside sheriff’s deputies.

Firefighters arrived and quickly began suppression efforts, bringing the blaze under control. Officials said the fire was largely confined to the garage but spread into the attic, causing significant roof and soffit damage. The home’s interior also sustained smoke and water damage. Damage is estimated at approximately $300,000.

Investigators said the home’s female tenant called 911 after her dog barked and she heard what she described as a loud explosion. She discovered the garage on fire, and the family gathered some belongings, two cats and the dog before evacuating safely. Three additional cats remained in the basement.

Paradise Drive, between Maple Road and South Oak Road, was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Multiple fire departments and emergency medical agencies assisted with the response, and the American Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced family.

One firefighter suffered a heat-related illness during suppression efforts.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
