LaPorte County, IN – Drivers traveling along Interstate 94 in northwest Indiana should prepare for overnight lane closures and changing traffic patterns this week as crews shift traffic for an ongoing resurfacing project.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), alternating lane closures will take place on I-94 between mile markers 29 and 34, from east of State Road 49 to west of U.S. 421, during the overnight hours of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. this week. The closures are needed to establish a new traffic configuration and are weather dependent.
Beginning on or after Wednesday, July 15, eastbound traffic will be moved back onto the eastbound side of I-94, with both lanes shifted to the right.
Starting on or after Friday, July 17, westbound traffic will be moved into counterflow lanes on the eastbound side of the interstate beginning near mile marker 34 at U.S. 421. Westbound traffic will then transition back to the westbound side near mile marker 29.
INDOT said the revised traffic pattern will remain in place through late August while resurfacing work continues.
Motorists are urged to slow down, watch for changing lane configurations and construction crews, and allow extra travel time during overnight hours. Drivers should also be aware that schedules may change if weather conditions delay construction.
The project affects a heavily traveled stretch of I-94 through LaPorte and Porter counties, including the Michigan City area.
