Richmond, VA – Virginia is under a tornado watch this Friday morning and afternoon, with the alert set to expire at 2 p.m. EDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) has placed eastern and northern parts of the state under the watch as a warm front continues to advance northward, bringing with it the potential for severe weather.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center reports that isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop during the day, with several likely to intensify into supercells. These supercells could produce a few tornadoes, as well as isolated damaging wind gusts reaching speeds of up to 60 mph.
Residents in the tornado watch area, which extends approximately 75 miles east and west of a line from Monticello, New York, to Patuxent River, Maryland, are urged to stay alert and be ready to act if severe weather warnings are issued. The NWS reminds Virginians that a tornado watch means conditions are ripe for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, and that they should closely monitor local weather updates for the latest information.
