Blacksburg, VA – Extreme heat will blanket much of central and southern Virginia on Tuesday, with apparent temperatures soaring as high as 112°F in some areas and multiple counties under urgent warnings.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for cities including Lynchburg, Danville, and South Boston from 8 a.m. through 8 p.m. Tuesday. A Heat Advisory has also been issued for parts of the New River Valley, including Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Martinsville, where the heat index will range between 104°F and 108°F.

In Danville and surrounding Southside communities, the combination of heat and humidity will create dangerously high heat indices up to 112°F, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Roanoke and Blacksburg may not hit those same extremes, but still face elevated risks with indexes between 105°F and 108°F. Local hospitals are urging residents to limit outdoor activities, hydrate frequently, and check on elderly neighbors.

Higher elevations west of I-77 may offer minor relief, and a stray mountain thunderstorm is possible by late afternoon, though widespread rain is not expected.

The NWS warns these temperatures can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or stroke. Residents should avoid peak heat hours, wear light clothing, and stay in air-conditioned spaces if possible.

Heat alerts remain active through Tuesday evening, with additional advisories possible if conditions persist.
