Richmond, Virginia – Dangerous heat will blanket much of central and southern Virginia through Wednesday evening, with peak afternoon heat indices reaching up to 110°F across the Piedmont and Southside regions.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, Extreme Heat Warnings now cover areas including Richmond, Farmville, Petersburg, and South Hill. The warning remains in effect through late Wednesday as excessive humidity combines with soaring temperatures, posing serious health risks. Maryland and North Carolina beaches remain under a Heat Advisory, where heat indices are expected to stay just under 110°F.
Cities like Louisa, Tappahannock, Emporia, and Franklin will see the worst conditions during the late afternoon hours. Officials urge residents to hydrate frequently, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Outdoor workers are advised to rest for at least 45 to 60 minutes each hour during peak heat to avoid heat stroke or exhaustion.
This marks one of the most widespread early-summer heat events for Virginia in recent years. Emergency managers remind the public that heat-related illness can escalate quickly in these conditions.
Extreme Heat Warnings remain in place through Wednesday evening, with updates expected if the heat wave lingers or intensifies.
