Richmond, VA – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for parts of Virginia and Maryland until 6 p.m. Wednesday, with strong winds, heavy rainfall, and potential hail threatening the region.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, multiple counties across Virginia—including Chesterfield, Henrico, Richmond, and Stafford—are under the watch. Independent cities such as Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Petersburg are also affected. The alert extends to coastal waters, including sections of the Chesapeake Bay, the Potomac River, and surrounding areas.
Forecasters warn that storms could develop rapidly, producing damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and localized flash flooding. There is also a risk of isolated tornadoes, particularly in the eastern part of Virginia and southern Maryland.
Residents are advised to stay weather-aware, secure loose outdoor objects, and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts. Motorists should exercise caution, as sudden heavy downpours may reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions.
The severe weather threat is expected to diminish after sunset as storms move offshore. However, scattered showers and gusty winds may persist into the evening hours. Officials urge the public to monitor local forecasts and be prepared to take shelter if necessary.
