Marquette, MI – Heavy snow will begin spreading across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Tuesday evening, creating dangerous travel conditions through Wednesday as a winter storm intensifies along the Lake Superior shoreline.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Winter Storm Warnings are in effect across much of the western and central Upper Peninsula beginning late Tuesday afternoon or evening and lasting into Wednesday afternoon or evening depending on location.

Marquette County could see the highest totals, with 6 to 11 inches of snow expected between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 5 p.m. Wednesday. Wind gusts up to 35 mph may also produce areas of blowing snow, especially near the Lake Superior shoreline.

Elsewhere across the U.P., including Ontonagon, Baraga and southern Houghton counties, snowfall totals of 5 to 8 inches are expected through Wednesday afternoon. Communities farther east, including Munising, Newberry and Grand Marais, may see 6 to 9 inches of snow along with gusty winds.

Across the western counties near Ironwood, Iron River and Iron Mountain, snowfall will begin earlier Tuesday afternoon with totals reaching 5 to 8 inches by early Wednesday afternoon.

Travel conditions could deteriorate rapidly during the Tuesday evening commute and remain hazardous into Wednesday morning as heavier snow redevelops after a brief overnight lull. Drivers are urged to carry emergency supplies and allow extra travel time as conditions worsen through Wednesday.
