University of Illinois Police Arrest Chicago Man for Domestic Violence, Weapons at Tailgate Event

Champaign, IL – A Chicago man was arrested Saturday evening near the University of Illinois for domestic violence and weapons charges.

University police arrested Tristan Banks, 34, after responding to a call at a tailgate near Kirby Avenue and Oak Street. Officers were dispatched around 7:40 p.m. after reports of Banks allegedly flashing a gun in his waistband and grabbing a woman by the neck.

According to police, officers arrived and detained Banks, reportedly finding two loaded handguns and pistol magazines on him. Multiple witnesses reported seeing the altercation and confirmed Banks’ violent actions. The victim was identified as Banks’ ex-girlfriend, with whom he has a history of domestic violence incidents.

Police determined that Banks was under the influence at the time of the arrest. He was charged with domestic violence, possessing a firearm in a prohibited area, and weapons possession while intoxicated. Banks is currently being held at Champaign County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing, and Banks is expected to face additional charges.
