Portland, IN – Two tornadoes struck near Portland, Indiana, on Sunday evening, leaving a trail of damage. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornadoes, including an EF-1 that caused significant damage to Portland High School and the American Legion.
The first tornado, rated EF-U, touched down at 7:42 p.m. just east of the Salamonie River, tracking 0.21 miles before dissipating in a cornfield. Minutes later, at 7:45 p.m., a stronger EF-1 tornado formed near W 75 S and Joan Drive, rapidly gaining strength. The tornado, with peak winds of 110 mph, traveled 2.74 miles, causing extensive roof damage to the high school and several homes in the area.
As the tornado moved east, it struck the American Legion, damaging its roof. Despite the widespread destruction, no injuries were reported.
