Clendenin, West Virginia — Detectives are again seeking public help to identify skeletal remains discovered along the Elk River more than a decade ago.
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, skeletal remains were found Aug. 31, 2014, under a bridge and along a riverbank off Reamer Road in Clendenin. The remains were sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., for forensic anthropological analysis.
The Smithsonian concluded the remains belong to a Caucasian male, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and estimated to be between 45 and 55 years old at the time of death. Forensic findings indicated a history of physical labor, poor dental health, and smoking, based on bone structure and dentition.
Investigators say a key identifying feature is evidence of a prior medical procedure on the right side of the skull. A single Y-shaped titanium plate had been surgically attached to the cranium before death, likely to relieve pressure following a traumatic injury. Authorities believe the distinctive implant could be critical in identifying the individual.
