Winnipeg, MB – A 38-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested following two stabbing incidents in the downtown area on Friday night, August 30, 2024. Winnipeg Police responded to the first stabbing around 8:00 p.m. at Portage and Carlton, where a man in his 50s was critically injured. Officers provided emergency care, and the victim was transported to a hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
About half an hour later, a second stabbing occurred at Graham and Garry. A man in his 20s was seriously injured and also required emergency medical attention. He was taken to a hospital and later upgraded to stable condition. The suspect fled the scene on a bus before attempting to evade police by swimming in the river near Point Douglas. Police safely apprehended him after he returned to the riverbank.
Investigations revealed that the incidents were related. The suspect and the first victim were drinking together at Portage and Carlton before an altercation led to the stabbing. When the suspect fled, he encountered two men who confronted him at Graham and Garry, resulting in the second stabbing. The suspect now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.
