Braidwood, IL – Drivers in Braidwood are being urged to avoid Main Street between Route 53 and Route 129 today as Union Pacific crews conduct emergency railroad crossing repairs.

According to Braidwood Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (E.S.D.A.), maintenance teams are removing and replacing a damaged crossing gate arm at the Main Street rail crossing. The gate arm was reportedly struck by a semi-truck, prompting a full closure of the crossing for safety and repair work.

The closure, which is expected to last throughout the day, will affect all traffic in the area. Braidwood E.S.D.A. officers are currently assisting with traffic control and are advising motorists to use alternate routes whenever possible to avoid delays.

Officials have not yet indicated when the crossing will reopen but noted that work is underway as of this morning. No injuries were reported in the incident involving the semi.

Motorists are urged to use caution if traveling near the site and to adhere to detour signs and law enforcement directions.

This rail crossing is a key thoroughfare for local commuters and freight transport, and delays in the area may impact travel times throughout Braidwood and nearby corridors.

Updates on the closure and repair progress will be posted by local agencies as new information becomes available.
