Vernon, Texas – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across the eastern Texas Panhandle Thursday afternoon and evening, with the risk of large hail, damaging winds, and intense lightning stretching into the night.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 9 p.m. CDT for 11 counties, including Wilbarger, Hardeman, Baylor, and Wheeler. The watch also covers areas farther north and east such as Hemphill, Lipscomb, and Collingsworth counties.
Storms may rapidly intensify through the late afternoon, especially along U.S. Route 83 and near rural highways across the region. Gusts over 60 mph and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter are possible with the strongest cells. Power outages and tree damage could occur where storms strike hardest.
Residents in towns like Vernon, Canadian, and Shamrock should monitor local alerts and stay indoors during severe weather. Have multiple ways to receive warnings and avoid driving during storms, especially in open or rural stretches.
The thunderstorm threat remains active through 9 p.m., and additional watches or warnings may follow as storms continue eastward overnight.
