The Texas Panhandle is under critical fire weather warnings today as strong southwest winds, reaching 50-60 mph, combine with low humidity and dry grasses, significantly heightening the wildfire risk. These conditions make outdoor burning, sparks, and any activities that could cause flames exceptionally dangerous. Residents are urged to take precautions by avoiding outdoor flames and securing loose items, as high winds can cause dangerous blowouts and spread fires rapidly.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the strongest gusts are expected between late morning and early evening, with conditions easing slightly by 8 p.m. Visibility may be reduced due to dust blowing across roadways, particularly along I-40 and nearby routes. Travel may be hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Today’s forecast predicts continued patchy blowing dust through the afternoon, with a high near 84°F and breezy conditions persisting into tonight. As the week progresses, Wednesday will see clearing skies with temperatures reaching around 70°F. Thursday is expected to bring sunny skies and highs near 66°F, although Friday and Saturday introduce a 50% chance of showers and possible thunderstorms, cooling temperatures to highs in the mid-60s to low-70s.
