Anchorage, Alaska – Ice jam flooding threats are building across Interior Alaska as spring breakup begins, with rising concern along major river systems that could impact communities with little warning over the coming days.

According to the Alaska-Pacific River Forecast Center, flood potential is above average across parts of mainland Alaska, especially along the upper Yukon River, lower Tanana River, and the Kuskokwim River near Crooked Creek and Aniak. Recent reports of thick, rough ice combined with below-average April temperatures are increasing the chance of sudden ice jams and rapid water rises.

Communities including Aniak and Kalskag are seeing heightened concern due to newly reported ice conditions, while additional elevated risk extends across the middle and lower Yukon, middle Tanana, and portions of the North Slope. These areas could experience localized flooding if ice jams form and restrict river flow.

The threat will persist through the spring breakup period, with updates expected in the coming days as river conditions evolve and temperatures gradually shift.
