Gatlinburg, Tenn. – Light snow is creating slick roads across the Smoky Mountains and surrounding areas this morning, with hazardous travel expected through 3 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until mid-afternoon for parts of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, including Sevier, Unicoi, Johnson, and Wise counties. Additional snowfall up to 1 inch is expected, enough to coat bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.
Communities including Gatlinburg, Erwin, Mountain City, and Wise are seeing the greatest impacts, particularly along higher elevation routes and shaded roadways where snow and ice can linger longer. Morning and early afternoon travel may be slowed by slippery conditions, especially on secondary roads and mountain passes.
Drivers are urged to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and check 511 systems in Tennessee and Virginia for live updates. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps, where icy patches may not be immediately visible.
Conditions are expected to improve after 3 p.m. Tuesday as temperatures gradually rise, though isolated slick spots could persist into the evening.
