Tallahassee, Florida – Red flags are flying along Gulf-facing beaches, and swimmers near US-98 should stay out of the surf through Friday night as a high risk of rip currents continues across the Panhandle coastline.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, life-threatening rip currents are likely at beaches in Walton, Bay, Gulf and Franklin counties. Surf heights of 2 to 4 feet will create strong, narrow channels of water capable of pulling swimmers away from shore, even in waist-deep water. Officials urge residents and visitors to remain out of the Gulf where red flags are posted and to follow local beach patrol guidance.

Farther inland, a soaking rain spreads across the region through Friday night, bringing widespread totals between 0.5 and 1.5 inches. Isolated communities along and north of I-10, including portions of Gadsden, Leon and Thomas counties, could see localized amounts exceeding 2 inches by late Friday. Brief downpours may cause temporary ponding on roadways such as I-10 and US-27, especially during heavier bursts.

The rain will ease early Saturday, but above-normal warmth remains locked in. Afternoon highs climb into the mid to upper 70s through the weekend, with some spots approaching 80 degrees by Sunday along US-319 and across the Big Bend.

Looking ahead to early next week, periodic rain chances return as a more active pattern develops. While the added rainfall will help drought conditions, it may also lead to additional runoff issues in poor drainage areas.

Beach hazards remain the most immediate concern through Friday night, and additional statements may be issued if surf conditions intensify.
