Phoenix, Arizona – Extreme heat will hammer the Desert Southwest starting Monday, with Phoenix and Tucson facing highs in the mid-110s and dangerous conditions stretching through Thursday. Residents are urged to take precautions as major to extreme heat risks could bring health emergencies, power outages, and travel disruptions across Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Texas and California.

According to the National Weather Service, an upper-level ridge will push temperatures to some of the hottest levels seen this summer. Major to locally extreme HeatRisk is forecast for central and southern Arizona, including Phoenix, Tucson, and Yuma, as well as Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Midland, and surrounding regions. Alerts will expand into southern California and western Texas, with heat risks remaining moderate to high into next week.

Infrastructure could strain as utilities manage higher demand, and those without reliable cooling or hydration face the greatest danger. Highway departments may close lanes or limit travel during peak afternoon hours to prevent heat-related incidents. Residents should limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, use air conditioning, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Schools and employers may adjust schedules or activate cooling centers to reduce risk.

This event marks one of the season’s most significant heatwaves, echoing similar episodes from recent summers. Warnings will likely remain in effect until at least next Thursday, with the potential for more advisories as dangerous heat lingers into mid-August.
