North Platte, NE – A hard freeze settling over Nebraska overnight is creating immediate risks for crops, gardens, and plumbing systems through early Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. CDT Saturday across a large portion of the state, including central, north central, southwest, and Panhandle regions. Temperatures have dropped as low as 20 degrees, cold enough to damage or kill sensitive vegetation during a critical early growth period.
Communities including North Platte, Ogallala, Broken Bow, Imperial, and Valentine are all seeing sub-freezing conditions through sunrise. Rural areas and low-lying spots may experience the coldest readings, increasing the risk for frost damage to crops and gardens already emerging this spring.
Residents are urged to cover or bring in plants and protect exposed pipes by wrapping or allowing faucets to drip. Agricultural impacts could be significant if precautions are not taken before temperatures rise later this morning.
Conditions are expected to improve after mid-morning, but additional cold snaps remain possible this weekend as spring weather patterns stay unstable.
