Southern New England – Beachgoers in southern New England are being warned of dangerous conditions today, as an offshore storm creates rough surf and a high risk of rip currents. Authorities are urging caution, especially for inexperienced swimmers. Strong rip currents are a threat along eastern-facing beaches, where large breaking waves are also expected.
According to the National Weather Service, a high surf advisory is in effect through 8 p.m. today. Rip currents pose a significant danger, and anyone entering the water should do so with extreme caution. Swimmers are advised to stay calm if caught in a current, float to conserve energy, and swim at an angle toward the shore. Lifeguards recommend avoiding swimming against the current, as this can lead to exhaustion.
In addition to today’s advisory, the extended forecast shows temperatures remaining moderate for the week. After today’s rain, Sunday will be sunny with a high of 69°F. The trend continues with clear skies and highs ranging from 73°F to 84°F through Thursday. This calm weather offers a welcome break from today’s stormy conditions.
