Pueblo, Colo. – Southern Colorado is set to experience its hottest day of the week Monday, with near-record temperatures expected across the region and a Heat Advisory in effect for parts of the Interstate 25 corridor as dangerous afternoon heat settles in.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, Monday’s temperatures will climb to within 1 to 4 degrees of daily and, in some locations, all-time record highs. A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon until 6 p.m. Monday for El Paso County and portions of Fremont County, where the combination of intense sunshine and hot temperatures will increase the risk of heat-related illness.
Afternoon highs are expected to reach 101 degrees in Pueblo, 99 degrees in Colorado Springs, 100 degrees in La Junta, 104 degrees in Las Animas, 103 degrees in Lamar, 100 degrees in Trinidad, 99 degrees in Canon City, and the mid-90s across much of the Arkansas Valley and southeastern plains.
Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations. Check on older adults, young children and anyone without reliable cooling, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
Forecasters say increasing moisture later this week will bring slightly cooler temperatures and a better chance for wetting rainfall across southern Colorado. Until then, the dangerous heat will remain the primary concern through Monday afternoon, and additional heat-related advisories remain possible if temperatures trend even higher.
