Western Kentucky Summer Weather: Tuesday Severe Storm Risk Follows Smoky Skies Monday

Paducah, Ky. – Residents across the Quad State should prepare for two weather concerns over the next two days, with Canadian wildfire smoke lowering air quality through Tuesday before a cold front brings the potential for severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, smoke drifting south from Canadian wildfires may reduce air quality across portions of western Kentucky, southern Illinois, southeast Missouri and southwest Indiana through Tuesday. The greatest air quality concerns are expected across southern Illinois and southwest Indiana, where sensitive groups, including children, older adults and people with heart or lung conditions, may experience greater health impacts. Limiting prolonged outdoor activity is recommended if smoke becomes noticeable.

Attention then shifts to Tuesday afternoon as a stronger cold front moves through the region. The Storm Prediction Center has placed eastern portions of the Quad State under a Level 2 of 5 (Slight Risk) for severe weather. Forecasters say thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts, hail and localized flooding, with the highest threat focused across western Kentucky and adjacent areas of southern Illinois and southwest Indiana.

Communities including Paducah, Madisonville, Owensboro, Hopkinsville, Marion, Evansville and surrounding areas should monitor forecast updates as the front approaches. Travelers may encounter rapidly changing conditions, especially during the afternoon and evening commute, with heavy rain reducing visibility and creating ponding on roads.

Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, secure loose outdoor items before storms develop and avoid flooded roadways if heavy rain occurs. Forecast confidence will continue to improve over the next 24 hours, and additional severe thunderstorm watches or warnings may be issued Tuesday as storms organize across the region.
