Cheyenne, WY – Snow will spread across key stretches of Interstate 80 near Arlington and Elk Mountain late Monday night, setting the stage for slick and potentially difficult travel through Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 11 p.m. Monday and continues until 5 p.m. MST Tuesday for the North Snowy Range Foothills. Forecasters expect 2 to 5 inches of accumulation, with the heaviest snow likely during the early morning and midday hours Tuesday.
The advisory includes Arlington and Elk Mountain along I-80, a corridor known for sudden wind gusts and rapidly changing road conditions. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first, increasing the risk of spinouts and crashes. Both the Tuesday morning and evening commutes could be affected as snow falls and temperatures hover near freezing.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra space between vehicles and prepare for reduced visibility in heavier bursts of snow. The Wyoming Department of Transportation encourages travelers to check road conditions by dialing 511 before heading out.
Snow should taper late Tuesday afternoon, but slick spots may linger into the evening as temperatures drop. Additional advisories could follow if snowfall rates increase overnight.
