New Orleans, LA — A tornado watch is in effect for Southeast Louisiana until 6 a.m. Thursday as Tropical Storm Francine approaches from the Gulf of Mexico. The National Weather Service warns that the storm’s outer bands could bring the potential for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms overnight.

The watch area covers a 55-mile-wide zone from northwest of Slidell, Louisiana, to southeast of Crestview, Florida. According to the NWS, transient supercells within Francine’s convective bands may trigger isolated tornadoes across the region.

Residents in Southeast Louisiana are urged to remain alert and monitor local weather updates. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes. Prepare to seek shelter if a tornado warning is issued. Aviation in the area could also face significant turbulence and wind gusts of up to 50 knots.

Stay updated with the latest weather information, and take precautions as Francine moves further inland.
