SOUTH BEND, Ind. – An 18-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with a weekend shooting that left one person injured in South Bend, police announced.
According to the South Bend Police Department, officers responded at approximately 11:40 p.m. Friday, July 24, to the 6700 block of Nimitz Parkway after receiving reports of shots fired.
When officers arrived, they learned the victim had already transported themselves to a local hospital with an apparent gunshot wound. Police said the victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
During the investigation, detectives identified Marquis Burton Jr., 18, as the suspect. Burton was later located, arrested, and transported to the St. Joseph County Jail.
According to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, Burton has been charged with criminal recklessness and criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon. Police emphasized that the charges are allegations, and Burton is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit continues to investigate the shooting. Authorities have not released additional information about what led to the incident or whether the suspect and victim knew one another.
